4/7/2022 Big Little Lies (Season One, 2017)Season one of Big Little Lies is a soapy and star-studded murder mystery, and remains one of HBO Max’s best binges. Unsurprisingly, the show starring almost exclusively wealthy white women does not contain nuanced critiques of the lives of wealthy white women. But would we even want it to?
9/10 4/5/2022 The Favourite (2018)Rumours, humour, armour (sort of), and certainly flavour! Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz out act each other in an elevated but gripping cat-fight set in 18th-century England, with editing embellishments from director Yorgos Lanthimos that make this movie a… best-louved of mine.
10/10 (I will be skimpy with 10/10’s, so you know what is worth a watch.) 4/5/2022 Spencer (2021)A slow, psychological, historical biopic. 10% Black Swan and 90% The Crown. Kristen Stewart gives a command performance as Princess Diana, but much like Lady D, had no supporting cast. One point for being coincidentally meta, but one good actor doth not a Best Picture movie make.
